Alpha Diallo: A Rising Voice of Senegalese Cinema

0

At the Berlin International Film Festival 2026, the emergence of Alpha Diallo signaled more than the arrival of a promising filmmaker—it marked the rise of a distinctive narrative voice shaped by cultural depth, artistic discipline, and a commitment to telling stories rooted in lived realities. Building on the emotional and moral complexity explored in Les âmes du Fouta, Diallo’s personal journey offers a compelling story in its own right.

From Fouladou to the World Stage

Born in the Fouladou region of southern Senegal (Kolda), Alpha Diallo’s trajectory reflects both geographic and artistic movement. At just 35, he has transitioned from local creative spaces to the international spotlight, culminating in his selection at Berlinale 2026. His short film Les âmes du Fouta not only introduced him to a global audience but also positioned Senegalese storytelling within contemporary cinematic discourse.

Yet Diallo’s rise is not accidental—it is the result of years of disciplined artistic development and a deep attachment to his cultural roots, which continue to inform his narratives.

Foundations in Theater and Early Media Work

Diallo’s creative instincts were first shaped in the world of theater, where he developed a sensitivity to dialogue, character, and dramatic tension. This early immersion laid the groundwork for his later work in film, particularly his ability to craft morally complex and emotionally resonant stories.

In 2016, he expanded into media, working with Radio Nova as a writer and commentator. This period sharpened his voice and narrative perspective. A year later, he took a decisive step into filmmaking by directing his first amateur short film, Love Coexists, in collaboration with France Télévisions—an early indication of his storytelling potential.

Professional Formation and Creative Breakthrough

Diallo’s career gained momentum through hands-on industry experience. His involvement in the “Troisième Œil Story” program, where he contributed to the France 3 series Face à Face, provided valuable exposure to professional production environments.

A pivotal moment came in 2020 during his residency at Atelier Cinéma 93, in partnership with the French National Center for Cinema. It was here that he conceived Les âmes du Fouta, the project that would ultimately propel him onto the international stage. Filmed in 2025 in the Senegal River valley (Taredji, Podor), the film reflects his commitment to authenticity—both in setting and in subject matter.

Expanding Horizons: Europe, Netflix, and Gaumont

Diallo’s growing reputation led him to broader collaborations across Europe’s audiovisual landscape. In 2021, he joined the European Screenwriters’ City, contributing to the France 2 series Le Code.

By 2022, his career reached a new milestone with his first collaboration with Netflix, where he worked as a screenwriter and director on the series En Place, created by Jean-Pascal Zadi and François Uzan. This partnership signaled his entry into global streaming platforms and expanded his creative reach.

Between 2023 and 2024, he further refined his craft as an “Author in House” at Elephant Story, before joining Netflix France in 2025 through the “Grow Creative” incubator. Alongside this, he has also been developing projects with Gaumont, one of Europe’s leading production companies.

A Storyteller Rooted in Purpose

Despite his international collaborations, Alpha Diallo remains deeply connected to Senegal. His work consistently reflects a desire to explore societal tensions, cultural identity, and moral dilemmas—often through narratives that confront taboo subjects.

Les âmes du Fouta, co-produced by Sunuy Films and Moabi Films, exemplifies this approach. Through the story of Penda and Moustapha—a couple divided over how to honor their deceased son—the film echoes the timeless structure of tragedy while remaining firmly anchored in Fulani cultural context.

What Lies Ahead

Far from being a singular success, Diallo’s Berlinale debut marks the beginning of an expanding career. He is currently developing a comedy series with Netflix, writing his first television film for France Télévisions, and preparing new directing projects—some of which he hopes to shoot in Senegal.

His trajectory suggests not only personal success but also a broader cultural impact. By bridging local narratives with global platforms, Alpha Diallo is helping to reposition Senegalese cinema within the international film landscape.

A New Chapter in African Storytelling

Alpha Diallo’s rise reflects a new generation of African filmmakers—creators who are both globally connected and deeply rooted in their origins. His work stands at the intersection of tradition and modernity, where personal stories become universal reflections.

In many ways, his journey mirrors the themes of his film: navigating between inherited values and contemporary realities. And like the characters he brings to life, Diallo continues to chart his path with conviction, nuance, and an unwavering commitment to storytelling.
